How to wind down after work

When work life is challenging, having a good wind-down routine when you finish the day can make a huge difference to your wellbeing.

So what do you do when you leave work each evening? Is there an activity that enables you to decompress before you shift back into home mode? Here are some simple ideas that add up to a calmer, more relaxed-feeling you.

If you commute, can you play some soothing music or listen to a podcast? If you’re in the car, can you sing along to some of your favourite tunes? This is a great way to release pent up emotions from the day. Give it the full performance!

Movement also really helps. Can you step out for a walk around the block or have a 10-minute dance session in the kitchen. Get the whole family involved.

Alongside your home-life commitments, see if you can plan something for the evening that you find fun to do. Watching your favourite show, reading a good book, playing a game are not guilty pleasures. They are all activities that are great for your mental wellbeing. Make it your homework to have a laugh.

Winding down at bedtime is also important. During times of stress our overactive minds can make it harder to nod off when we need to. It’s helpful to separate out the things you can and can’t control - make a plan for what you can do, and see if you can let go of the rest.

Another good strategy is to write tomorrow’s to-do list before you get into bed, so you’re not holding it all in your brain. This can ease your mind a little before sleep.

When we’re able to fully unwind from work, we’re better placed to deal with it all again tomorrow so give yourself space and permission to relax in whatever way works for you.
