It’s cool to be kind (to yourself)

Sometimes the stress we feel at busy times can be to do with expectations. Often we tell ourselves that not only do we have to tick off each task but we have to absolutely nail it.

If that’s how you're feeling, then this is an important reminder that none of us get everything right all of the time.

Ask yourself if instead of perfect, would good enough be ok?

If that’s hard to do then imagine you are talking to a friend instead. Would you be so tough on them? Or would you say that it’s ok to let some things slide for the sake of your own wellbeing?

That might help you to give yourself a little leeway, but can you take it one step further?

Can you spend a moment congratulating yourself on all the great things you’ve already done?

When we’re focussed on what we have to do in the future we can forget to be proud of what we’ve already done. Make a list of all the little things you’ve achieved and give yourself props for it.

Another side effect of trying to do many things at once is that mistakes can get made. How do you normally treat yourself when that happens? Does self-criticism creep into your response?

Being kind to yourself in the moments when things don’t go so well is important too. Try to remember the age-old truth that we all make mistakes, because we’re all human.

You don’t have to brush it under the carpet but gently accept what has happened and find a helpful way to move on.

Go easy on yourself at this hectic time, take deep breaths, give yourself space to wind down, and keep doing things you find fun.
