We all have our preferred ways of communicating with others. Understanding your own style and that of the people you interact with can be really helpful. It allows you to not only adapt your approach when you need to, but get a feel for where other people might be coming from. Here we have identified four main communication styles. You may strongly identify with one or see yourself in a couple.
The Heron is a goal focused communicator. They are direct, to the point and don’t like small talk. Heron’s move quickly and avoid getting bogged down in detail. They are decisive, high achieving and push for results. They value finding solutions and getting things done.
The Parakeet is an engaging communicator. They are expressive, upbeat and enjoy wide-ranging discussion. Parakeets like to weave stories into conversation and focus on the big picture. They often process thoughts and generate ideas as they talk. They value creativity and innovation.
The Raven is an analytical communicator. They are logical, and systematic. Ravens like gathering all the details before offering an opinion. They like to stick to the facts. They take their time, they’re thorough and they’re precise. They value getting things right and doing things well.
The Starling is a cooperative communicator. They are collaborative and prefer to smooth over conflict. Starlings like to prepare and make an effort to consult. They’re easy to talk to, they’re attentive listeners and they’re calm. They value relationships and working together.
